That you use them sparingly, that you provide meaningful and useful content, and that you invest a lot of your free time and volunteer efforts in the site. So, eventually you do not deserve to be denied of that income. And will I be so kind, please, as to turn my ad blocking software off.

I run over two dozens of web sites myself, and some of them depend on ad income. You couldn’t find a person better suited to agree with you and to support you. Of course I do.

However… did you noticed that blinking and shaking “There is 1 message waiting for YOU!” ad on your site? I have a friend who mistook it for a genuine message, and clicked on it… After cleaning his PC from a horde of Trojans, all downloaded by a single got-through, I decided to trace where it came from. In his browser history, I found your site. Opened it, saw this ad. And clicked on it, having prepared first to examine what is to come.

I underestimated the thing. Hadn’t been my laptop running Debian GNU/Linux, I would be battling a new horde of Trojans now instead of writing this. Your ads are booby-trapped with malware, pal.

I believe you that you didn’t knew that, that you got them by Yahoo, Google or whatever else most reputable ad source can ever exist. However, I couldn’t care less. To me, it is your site that wasted 4 hours of my time on cleaning malware. If it wasn’t my friend’s computer, he would have to pay what could buy him a decend second-hand PC. And, these ads also wasted probably thousands of hours of other sysadmins time, plus uncounted hours of e-mail users time spent on deleting spam, plus unknown amount of money drained from bank accounts, stolen and re-sold personal data, etc, etc.

So please, do not expect me, or anyone I know, to visit your site without an ad blocker in the foreseeable future. Yes, your content is great. Yes, you use ads… well, on less than 100% of the screen area. And I bet you invest a lot of time in your site, it is good. I like you for this.

However, your ads are the computer Tyhoid Mary. Every penny you earn on them costs a grand to a lot of other people. (This penny is a small percent of what the cybercriminals paid to the ad agency, which is a small percent of what they earned from their activities, which is in turn a VERY small percent of the losses they caused to your visitors.) You do not deserve the money. What you deserve is a lawsuit that will cost you more arms and legs than you have.

Next time you would like to complain about being visited with ad blockers, please take a really good look at all the ads ever served by your site. If you absolutely never had a booby-trapped ad, and you can prove it, you may politely tell Mr. Ad Blocker that he doesn’t need this caution. Most people will understand you, and will endure some ads to help you a little. Of the rest, some are assholes that don’t care, but many just too recently paid what could buy them a decent second-hand PC. You can’t really blame them for being overprotective.

However, if you ever maybe have had a malware-infested ad, shut up. Or, even better, thank profusely Mr. Ad Blocker that he visits you at all. Visiting your site is a tremendous act of good will. Learn to value it.

Hi there, In a blog post (interview, press release, please substitute the correct place) you complained that ad blocking software is harming your business.
